Psoriasis project
Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that causes inflammation in the body. Psoriasis is a common, long-term disease that causes red, itchy scaly patches, patches can range from a few spots of dandruff-like scaling to major eruptions that cover large areas. The most commonly affected areas are the lower back, elbows, knees, and legs, soles of the feet, scalp, trunk, face and palms. Most types of psoriasis go through cycles, flaring for a few weeks or months, then subsiding for a time or even going into remission. Psoriasis signs and symptoms can vary from person to person. Common signs and symptoms include - red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales, small scaling spots (commonly seen in children), dry, cracked skin that may bleed or itch, itching, burning or soreness, thickened, pitted or ridged nails, swollen and stiff joints
Researchers believe both genetics and environmental factors play a role for the immune system to malfunction. The condition is not contagious. It can begin at any age, psoriasis has 2 peaks of onset, the first at age 20 to 30 years and the second at age 50 to 60 years. Many people who are predisposed to psoriasis may be free of symptoms for years until the disease is triggered by some environmental factor such as weather especially cold or dry conditions. Injury to skin such as cut or scrape, a bug bite and a severe sun burn, stress, smoking and heavy alcohol consumptions are also seemed triggering factors
Although there is no cure, there are more effective treatments for psoriasis today than ever before. Treating psoriasis can help improve symptoms as well as lower the risk of developing other health conditions such as psoriatic arthritis, heart disease, and depression. This project started at RamaVarma District Ayurveda Hospital, Thrissur since 2015. Patients are selected from OPD after taking detailed case history. Ayurveda treatment is effective in management of Psoriasis which include OPD and IP level management with Panchakarma therapies and allied procedures. The treatment also mainly concentrate on modification of lifestyle, diet and on stress management along with medication. Chance of remission are seeing at lower rate especially in patients who follow necessary change in life style along with medication.
