Nirvisha

Endosulfan is a deadly organic chloric compound. Its negative impacts remain a social issue in the Kasaragod district. Uncontrolled spraying of endosulfan has made the soil, water and air in the area toxic.

The endosulfan disaster occurred between 1978 and 2000. In 2001, the High Court of Kerala banned the spraying of endosulfan. Hundreds died and about 4,000 people are still suffering. The endosulfan cell was formed in 2005-2006. A study conducted by the Indian Medical Council on endosulfan affected areas in the district found that a number of reproductive diseases were on the rise.

Nirvisha is a project launched by the Indian Systems of Medicine to prevent it. The scheme started in the financial year 2017-2018 at first in Kayyur-Cheemeni Grama Panchayat of Kasaragod district and then in Ayurveda Dispensaries in Kallar Panathadi Grama Panchayat of Kasaragod from the financial year 2019-2020. Under this project Ayurveda treatment is given to young boys and girls in the reproductive age group of endosulfan affected families. The aim of this project is to prevent genetic defects in the next generation. Selected patients from distressed families are enrolled in the dispensary and evaluated for the health care of young people in endosulfan affected areas. They have to undergo Panchakarma treatment and resuscitation. The treatment course is for 30 days and after that they are regularly monitored. Government Ayurveda Hospital Cheemeni has been allotted an additional 10 beds for this project. Government Ayurveda Dispensary Kottodi, Panathadi provides OP treatment.
