Milestones
The importance of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative systems of medicine for the universal availability of health care was first placed by World Health Organisation in their Alma Ata Declaration in 1978. Followed by this, a Traditional Medicine Programme of WHO was also introduced for the standardisation of traditional and complementary medicine. India, being the custodian of rich tradition in medicine, inspired by WHO, established a separate Department for Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1995 to develop these systems as per the needs of modern era.

The ISM and Homoeopathy Department was renamed as Department of AYUSH with a view to provide focused attention to the development of education and research in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy Systems

Central Government formed separate Ministry for AYUSH to give more importance to these systems

Government of Kerala has also started a separate Department for AYUSH
