Balyam
The project for children implemented by Indian Systems of Medicine department in association with district panchayath, Malappuram. When Covid 2019 became a global pandemic, it was proved beyond doubt that its prevention and treatment is possible through Ayurveda, the age old traditional medical system in India. We have seen the first and second waves. It was predicted that there would be a third wave and it would affect the children more gravely. In such a situation this project was designed to improve the immunity of children through ayurvedic medicines which are supposed to be free of side effects.
Aim
Improve immunity of children to prevent the spread of pandemic. Utilise the Indian traditional medical system, Ayurveda in preventive medical activities. Beneficiaries are Children aged 2-5 in the implementation area.
Mode of implementation
Project is implemented in the government Ayurveda dispensary of a selected panchayath in each of the 32 divisions of district panchayath. The District Medical Officer (implementing officer of the project) purchases the medicines and distributes to the selected institutions. They, in association with ICDS prepares the list of children through anganwadis.
According to Ayurveda terminology, bala is the immunity or disease preventing capacity of the body. Food or medicine will help improve the immunity only if it is digested and assimilated properly. Diseases like indigestion and worm infestation prevent this assimilation. Hence such diseases need to be treated first, then rasayana medicine is given which improves the immunity.
Medicine is distributed in three courses.
In the first week krimighna vati tablet is given twice daily before food.
In the second week, two syrups – rajanyadi and ashtachoorna are given 1tsp twice daily before food.
In the third week koosmanda rasayana I tsp twice daily after food is administered.
Basic immunity responses and metabolic activities of the children are monitored on the first, 21st and 60th day.
Monetary assessment
9.6 lakhs from the current fiscal allotted by District panchayath is distributed among 32 institutions.
Monitoring
A committee composed of the district panchayath president, members of the district panchayath, district medical officer, panchayath presidents of concerned panchayaths and medical officers evaluate the implementation and physical achievements.
Completion
The report generated from monitoring the subjects is submitted to the district medical officer and district panchayath as impact report.
